Planning Ahead

PORTRAIT ASSIGNMENT

who will you shoot: Who ever I come across that is seemingly interesting enough to take a photo of.
where will you shoot: I will shoot in the hallways, people outside in the cold who are contrasting with their backgrounds.
what will you do to make the shot successful: My awesome photography skills.

Self Portrait and Portraits 5

photography self portrait

I chose this photo because I think the composition of it is really nice, how your attention is guided from Paul and the baby, to his wife, to the dog in the back. It's set up very nicely. Also it's Paul McCartney soo

Self Portrait and Portraits 4

FORMAL PORTRAIT

Google images pls. This is killing me. You can tell the cat is just so done. Love this photo though, really stuck out among all the serious soldier formal pictures. Well, I mean, who am I to say that this man and his cat aren't soldiers.

OooO she's killin it. You can just tell from her face that she knows she's better than you.

Self Portrait and Portraits 3

CASUAL PORTRAITS

I chose this "casual" portrait of Ellen Page because she's a favorite actress of mine, and she's so righteous I can't even handle it. RIGHTEOUS RIGHTEOUS

I chose this picture because it makes me smile. I don't understand how he is so casual in this stance in those socks. Too great.

Self Portrait and Portraits 2

ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITS

I chose this photo because I really think it tells a very interesting story and the composition is set up perfectly. Simple, yet complex.

I chose this photo because it's hardcore. YOU'RE NOT HARDCORE, UNLESS YOU LIVE HARDCORE. I like the lighting as well. The woman in the portrait reminds me of Rosie the Riveter.

Self Portrait and Portraits 1

Self portraits are tough for a number of reasons; you can’t see yourself to know how you look until after the fact (tip don’t forget to suck that gut in). Setup can be more time consuming due to the running back and forth setting timers. Focus is difficult because again you can’t see where that focus point is resting and if you are using a timer mode there is a chance you weren’t in the frame when the camera found something to focus on.

Tip #1: Bring Something to Focus On

One easy solution to this problem is to bring something to stand in your place. Height doesn't matter so much as distance, but try to match it to yourself as best as you can for accuracy. If you have an extra tripod or light stand, these make perfect substitutes that will stand upright exactly where you need them. I was out in my yard so I grabbed a shovel from my shed, stuck it in the ground, focused and then moved the shovel. Rudimentary, but it worked perfectly.

Tip #2: Capture You

A self-portrait should be a very personal expression, not simply a mirror of something you've seen elsewhere. Think about who you want to be and how you want to say that. Use props, scenery, pose and lighting conditions to convey your personality. And most of all, have fun!

Tip #: Get Closer

The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. In some cases this means that the center of interest—the subject—is just a speck, too small to have any impact. Even when it is big enough to be decipherable, it usually carries little meaning. Viewers can sense when a subject is small because it was supposed to be and when it's small because the photographer was too shy to get close.
Don't be shy. If you approach people in the right way, they'll usually be happy to have their picture made. It's up to you to break the ice and get them to cooperate. Joke around with them. Tell them why you want to make the picture. Practice with people you know so that you are comfortable; people can sense when you aren't.

20 Squares Photo Assignment

Mural Project Preview

1. What theme could you use here at school to make your own mural that tells a unique Akins story?  -I could use the theme of equality because I think that's something this school has a lot of.

2. Why is this theme worth devoting time and effort to capture? Why would other students care about this theme?
-I think this is worth capturing because I'd like to amplify our good qualities at Akins. Other students would care about this because it would make them feel happy feels.

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages to using a phone camera to do this project?
-A phone camera can't really capture a scene as well as an actual camera, but it does make it easier to share with the word-social media and what not

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages to using an SLR camera to do this project?
-Advantages- we can capture more detail, more options when taking photo
-Disadvantages- Can't share with the world as fast

5. Should we use phones or SLR cameras for this project? Why?
- we should use SLR cameras because they're much better than camera phones.. but we're not going to so I don't understand the point of this question.

ACADEMICS SHOOT REFLECTION

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
- It was hard to find subjects to take pictures of when no teachers would let me into their rooms.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
-I think a lot about how I angle and hold the camera, because I think that's what affects a photo the most.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
-I'd be more careful of how I spent my time and what I took pictures of.

4. What things would you do the same?
-Be awesome.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
- Simplicity and Lines

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
-Framing

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
-Avoiding Merges

ACADEMICS SHOOT

  LINES

 1. I'd say I followed this rule pretty well.
2. The subject is... Uhm.. Everything. I suppose because it's the library and everyone is studying different things.
3. If people can't tell what the subject is then that's their loss.

SIMPLICITY

 1. I didn't really follow any rules when taking this photo, I just wanted to have a picture of this. But in the end it turned out to be following simplicity, somewhat.
2. The subject of this photo is speech. If you've never taken speech with Mr. Valles then you won't understand.
3. Obviously people will understand this represents speech. Obviously.

 RULE OF THIRDS

 1. I followed this rule perfectly. Praise me.
2. The subject is God Bryce in all his Godliness glory!
3. It better freakn be clear. All those who don't know Bryce are missing out!

BALANCE

 1. Again, I followed this rule perfectly because I am perfect.
2. The subject is Noah and stairs. Sue me.
3. Yes, people understand what the subject is. Unless people don't know what stairs or a Noah is.

AVOIDING MERGES

 1. I don't really understand this rule so I'm just going to say I followed it superbly.
2. The subject is Piers and his kingliness.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?
-Of course.

FRAMING

1. I followed this rule well because the gate is framing these snazzy guys.
2. The subject is life
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?

steadily, tragically

"To me, every creature, human or nonhuman, has an equal right to live, and this feeling, this belief that every animal and I are equal, affects me every time I frame an animal in my camera. The photos are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes." -Nick Brandt

AFRICA

1. I really enjoyed looking at the photos in this presentation. There was so much to look at. Although I felt as though some of the pictures were a tad over edited, they were still amazing.

2.Favorite photo

3. This is my favorite photo because it reminds me of the painting The Temptation of Saint Anthony by Salvador Dali. Such a great photograph.

4. The rule of thirds was used in this photo to create focus on the elephants.
5.Nick Brandt
a. He photographs on medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses.
b. interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of Being. In the state of Being before they are no longer are. Before, in the wild at least, they cease to exist.
c.one of his goals being to record a last testament to the wild animals and places there before they are destroyed by the hands of man

QUICK WRITE

ACADEMICS SHOOT PREVIEW

BEST STORY

I think this is the photo that tells the best story because the composition is set up in such a way where the viewer can clearly see the high schoolers giving food to older people who you can make an educated guess about and say they're homeless.

ACTION

This shows action because there's a lot of movement in the photo that has stood still for a second.

MOST INTERESTING

I love this photo because I think it's super cool. The colors, contrast, and focus point is amazing.

3. Junior Year

1. I picked this photo because I think it's equal parts sad and hilarious because we've all been stuck in the library surrounded by books cramming for finals.
2. The photographer chose to use a unique perspective to make this photo stand out.
3. I could take photos like this in the library..
4. I would like to wander the halls and go where ever the wind takes me to take photographs.
5.As the photographer, I will take amazing photos because I'm amazing.

What do I want from this 6 weeks? I guess I want to have better grades in my classes. Also my organization skills could use some work. Sorry, I don't really care about this post so I'm just half-assing it.

Quick Write

I don't really understand why everyone is so upset. It's just a kid with a phone. She's not old enough to be aware of her surroundings and the world. Give her a break.
Also the photographer used balance and simplicity in the photo.
